Green Hydrogen Champions

Only one operational green hydrogen plant has been identified in Africa. Located in Namibia, it is used to reduce iron ore using green hydrogen produced by water electrolysis. The electrolysis is powered by wind turbines.

No manufacturers of equipment for this type of plant have been identified in Africa.

A Masdar / McKinsey report dated 18/11/2022 indicates that Africa could meet 10% of global demand for green hydrogen by 2050. The continent could draw on its abundant “solar and wind resources” to produce 30 to 60 million tonnes per year of green hydrogen by 2050. It could also become one of the world’s most competitive sources of green hydrogen by 2030, with costs estimated at between €1.73/kg and €2.50/kg, but falling to €1.15/kg to €1.54/kg by 2050. They estimate that between €307 and €587 billion will be invested in the renewable energies needed to produce hydrogen, while electrolyzers will require between €110 and €212 billion.
