Founded in 2013, MellowVans has around 40 employees. “MellowVans” are three-wheeled electric delivery vehicles designed and manufactured in South Africa. They are road-licensed and provide low-cost, emission-free last-mile transport for e-commerce distribution. The vehicles feature a large loading capacity, a regenerative braking system and an IoT system for data generation and route planning. The vehicles are manufactured at the MellowVans plant in Stellenbosch with 70% local content. They are popular with South African brands who integrate them into their delivery fleets, including Takealot, Spar, Woolworths and DHL. In October 2024, MellowVans partnered with Itemate Solutions to launch a mobile store solution for African telecom companies. Following a successful proof of concept with telecoms group Telkom, an adapted version of the vehicles, designed to meet the needs of telecoms companies across Africa, is now being deployed. The vehicles have a range of 130 km per charge. At current Eskom rates, this corresponds to a cost of 15c/km
